Why we stopped designing open-plan homes
After a decade of open-plan, our post-occupancy research told us something surprising. A reflection on how evidence changed our practice.
We design homes informed by research into how people actually live — not how architects think they should. Every project begins with observation, ends with evidence, and is shaped by the lives within it.
Before we draw a single line, we study how you live. The morning routines, the evening rhythms, the way light moves through your day. Our research informs every decision — from the orientation of a window to the height of a worktop.
We spend time in your existing home. Observing how spaces are used, where light falls, what works and what doesn't. No questionnaire can replace this.
Sun path studies, wind patterns, views, neighbours, noise. We map the site's conditions so the house works with its context, not against it.
Twelve months after completion, we return. We measure energy use, talk to you about what works, and feed findings back into future projects. Learning never stops.
A selection from our 140+ completed projects. Each one began with research, each one shaped by the people who live in it.
Bath, Somerset · New build · 285m²
A family home designed around the rhythms of three generations. Research-led orientation maximises winter sun; deep overhangs shade summer rooms.
Cotswolds · Renovation · 420m²
Edinburgh · Extension · 85m²
Norfolk · Conversion · 195m²
Bristol · Interior · 140m²
These aren't slogans. They're the commitments we make to every client, on every project, regardless of size or budget.
Before we sketch anything, we spend time understanding how you live. Your routines, your hopes, the way you want to feel at home. The best design begins with the best questions.
Natural light is the single most important element of a good home. We study sun paths, model shadows, and design every room to receive the light it needs at the times you need it.
We specify materials that age well, construction that endures, and details that won't need replacing in ten years. A home should be built for generations, not trends.
Every project is assessed for embodied and operational carbon. We specify low-carbon materials, maximise insulation, and design for minimal energy use — because good architecture is responsible architecture.
We don't hand over drawings and disappear. We visit site regularly, answer questions as they arise, and return a year after completion to see how the home is really performing.

"What set Homeology apart was how much time they spent understanding us before designing anything. The house they created doesn't just look beautiful — it works. Every room feels considered. We've never been happier at home."
"We'd been burned by architects before. Homeology were different — transparent about costs, honest about what would and wouldn't work, and genuinely interested in how we lived. Our extension is the best thing we've ever done."
"Renovating a listed building is terrifying. Homeology guided us through every stage with patience and expertise. The result respects the history of the building while making it a proper home. Couldn't recommend them more highly."
